Another short post as this week I am in the middle of launching version 1.2 of the Mindmarrow site. I am hoping that all subscribers will seamlessly receive new posts, and hope that the move to a new design expands the community of readers. So please dear reader if you like the new look and feel of the site, please forward to those who might be interested in participating. Also, I’m looking forward to inviting people to guest post here this coming year, so if you have some ideas of some slow thinking articles on art as it pertains to life, science, business, or xyz please contact me!

Some things brewing – I had an interview with someone who is writing a book about non-traditional working moms. She interviewed me, and I am here to report there is another world on her way – non-traditional working moms have the right business model I believe, and we could all learn from some of these mavericks. Also, I was accepted to a fantastic workshop in January – more details to come. Lastly, I am nose deep in research on creativity and science, re-reading old texts by David Bohm, and creating new connections with contemporary artists and thinkers who are navigating the cross sections of art and science.

One of these interdisciplinary people I have met virtually is Bryan Applewood. I found him a couple weeks ago by virtue of a book review of Arthur Miller’s book on art and science he wrote – one where he took the words out of my mouth with respect to cautiously digesting a scientist’s take on the arts, and arts based on science. I contacted him and learned he is a prolific, award winning writer. After realizing I could not purchase his books on Amazon in the US (he is based in the UK), he generously sent me two books, one which I began last night. The title of this book is based on a poem by Emily Dickinson “The Brain is Wider Than the Sky.” Needless to say I am very drawn to his thesis of the repercussions of the second machine age, and a dangerous tendency to simplify which is so popular now. Thank you Mr. Appleyard for bringing this gorgeous poem to my attention, and I look forward to completing your books!!

The Brain is Wider Than the Sky, Emily Dickinson

The Brain—is wider than the Sky—
For—put them side by side—
The one the other will contain
With ease—and You—beside—

The Brain is deeper than the sea—
For—hold them—Blue to Blue—
The one the other will absorb—
As Sponges—Buckets—do—

The Brain is just the weight of God—
For—Heft them—Pound for Pound—
And they will differ—if they do—
As Syllable from Sound—
