AIX Artisan Independent Experimental Scent Fair at the Hammer Museum

I’m honored to be participating in the inaugural AIX Artisan Independent Experimental Scent Fair at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles! I will be presenting my fragrance for the project “On Forgetting | Filing the Flask”. I am among some incredibly talented perfumers doing some terrific, innovative work in the field of niche perfume. Please join me! Many, many thanks to the good people at The Institute for Art & Olfaction for their support of my work, and the curators at the Hammer Museum with a brilliant vision to see fragrance as a compelling medium for art.

May 6–8, 2016

Co-presented by The Institute for Art and Olfaction and Luckyscent/Scent Bar

An international selection of fragrance makers will upend your preconceptions of perfume at this three-day artisan, independent, experimental scent fair. Browse highly conceptual—even unexpected—scents; participate in workshops or a panel; and attend the fragrance fête of the season, The Institute for Art and Olfaction’s Third Annual Art and Olfaction Awards with emcee Zackary Drucker. Perhaps you’ll even find your new signature scent.

On Color: An Exhibition on Art History & Coloring (2)

I’ve arranged a colorful exhibition of works by over 25 local and international artists* who pay homage to contemporary artists and thinkers from the likes of Diane Arbus, Donald Judd, Eva Hesse and Joseph Cornell. Artists have contributed from throughout the US, to Japan and London.

Pushdot Studio will display the exhibition of beautifully colored posters from tracings found in Epstein’s coloring book In a True Democracy the Many are Obligated to the Few. The exercise in coloring is a gesture to distill art and art history, to dialog about lineage, and to play with the seriousness that is “Art”.

Proceeds from the sale of the works and coloring books will go to da Vinci Arts Middle School arts programming.

OPEN/CLOSE: Friday April 1st – May 27th, 2016

On Forgetting | Filling the Flask
A solo show of new work at Pushdot (August 7 – September 25, 2015)

The installation will include painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and scent that address focus and kindness in forgetting. Yes, all that varied material to inspire focus. You will recognize patterns in the work and walk away with something that speaks specifically to you. The work has been two years in the making, and I would love to see you there!

Artist Reception: August 7, 2015, 6-8 PM
Pushdot Studio
2505 SE 11th Ave, Suite 104 (The Ford Building), Portland, OR

Continuing my exploration of Psyche’s mythical journey to reunite with Eros, in “On Forgetting | Filling the Flask” I address the third of her four required tasks. Previously I have explored “Sorting the Seeds” in which she learns to set priorities, and“Learning to Say No” where she understands the need to be true to herself.

Here, she must fill a flask from a dangerous, rushing waterfall. Zeus, in the form of an eagle, comes to the rescue and fills it for her. In doing so, Zeus represents the leader who resolves the situation by being direct, forgetting the minutiae and keeping an eye on the prize. Said another way, it is this focus on what matters — and forgetting what doesn’t — that enables us to recognize critical patterns and clues that are at first hidden in plain sight.
