ARTIST STATEMENT
My art practice as a whole is a towering improvisation. Mindmarrow is the the center of my practice: it’s where I store information, inspiration and fodder that makes my creative practice whole. It is never one thing, but a multitude of creative trajectories.
As an interdisciplinary artist, mediums are key to the messages in my work. Through learning new materials and creating diverse works across sculpture, drawing, painting, and scent. Through learning new materials and creating diverse works I am creating greater access to the universal themes I’m exploring. I am described as a “Neo-Dada” artist and “disruptive” where nonsense and serious play are continual features of my work.
Since 2006, the main theme in my work is centered on the Greek myth of Psyche. According to the myth, there are four tasks she must complete along her journey in order to be reunited with her love, Eros. The associated themes are on forgetting, sorting priorities, saying no, and learning our rhythms. Each is a symbol that mirrors a specific time throughout life where we attempt to marry our soul with love—whatever those partnerships or loves look like at a given time, and regardless of whether or not they are successful. For several years at a time I will work on a particular task, exploring different mediums that speak explicitly to the symbols at hand.
My explorations with scent started with on forgetting. The playful exercise of creating a medicine chest that would contain scents to “forget last night”, “forget five years ago” and so on turned into a serious journey on the power of scent and creativity. I published a book of my research and experience in 2019 titled Nose Dive. The book has traveled throughout the world, reaching readers in over 30 countries across Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe, and both North and South America. I continue to do research and collaborations with other artists and organizations to further the interdisciplinary study of scent and its ability to strengthen our creative practices and creative organizations.
